Tenant Insurance

All About Tenant Insurance

Storage Renting and Moving Overview

There’s one topic that many people are confused about prior to renting a storage unit: Tenant Insurance. Storage units call it all sorts of names, like storage insurance, protections plans, or renter’s insurance, but it’s all the same. It’s insurance that protects your items while they are being stored, and it keeps you worry-free when your things are away. It’s essentially the same as getting renter’s insurance to cover the items in your apartment or home.

Yet like any insurance policy there are things you need to know about it prior to buying. So we’ve put together a list of common questions we’re asked about insurance, providing answers to clear up any confusion.

To sign up for insurance, just give your facility manager a call and they’ll help you get the ball rolling.

Frequently Asked Questions About Tenant Insurance

Q: Do I need tenant insurance?

Do you have a homeowner’s or renter’s insurance plan in place? If not, you need tenant insurance because insurance is required to store. If you do have insurance already, do you know if it covers items in storage? If not, then again, you need tenant insurance. If it does, how long does it cover the items for? If it doesn’t cover them for an extended period of time, you will need tenant insurance. You’ll also need to determine exactly how much coverage your current insurance plan provides. If it’s less than the value of the items in storage, you will need additional protection with tenant insurance.

Q: What does tenant insurance cover?

Tenant insurance provides coverage for items that experience damage while in the storage unit, as well as theft. It also covers you in case of natural disasters, like tornadoes, hurricanes, and earthquakes.

Q: What are the policy options?

We offer one policy that covers up to $2,000 and it costs just $9.00 a month. Your facility manager will have more details on plan costs and coverage.

Q: Do I have to sign a contract?

No. Our leases are month to month so therefore our insurance coverage is month to month. When you cancel your lease with us, remember to do the same with your insurance.

Q: Does every facility offer insurance?

Yes, our facilities offer insurance through the Storage Business Owner’s Alliance. Using SBOA helps ensure your coverage will not go interrupted.

Q: What is the deductible?

That’s another added benefit of using tenant insurance over your homeowner’s or renter’s policy: our plans require no deductible. Yep, no deductible to file a claim. Your current policies may require a pretty hefty deductible before coverage, so weigh the costs and benefits of all options.

Overall, tenant insurance is designed for your protection and peace of mind. Just like you want to keep the items in your home safe, things in storage should be no different. Sure, our additional security features will help to keep them safe, but tenant insurance provides added coverage in case of damage. If you have any more questions about tenant insurance, we’d be glad to help you answer them. Your local facility will have more specific information regarding options in your area, so make sure to give them a call.
